Aphids show interspecific and intraspecific variation in life history responses to host plant infection by the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea

چکیده
The life histories of insect herbivores are affected by variation in host plant quality, with poor quality typically being associated reduced herbivore fecundity, size and longevity. Plant pathogens ubiquitous nature can alter as experienced herbivores. We asked how infection the widespread economically important fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea history traits two aphid species. found that black bean Aphis fabae were negatively reared on infected plants, showing population growth rate, size, off-plant survival time development rate. In contrast, we pea aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum benefitted from degree benefit varied between clonal lines. This work suggests ecological economic consequences dynamics pests could be difficult to predict.

Living fast and dying of infection: host life history drives interspecific variation in infection and disease risk.
Parasite infections often lead to dramatically different outcomes among host species. Although an emerging body of ecoimmunological research proposes that hosts experience a fundamental trade-off between pathogen defences and life-history activities, this line of inquiry has rarely been extended to the most essential outcomes of host-pathogen interactions: namely, infection and disease patholog...
متن کاملInterspecific and intraspecific variation in cercariae release.
Given the importance of temperature for the shedding of trematode infective stages (cercariae) from gastropod first intermediate hosts, we investigated the response to temperature increases of trematodes of the intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus collected from different latitudes (differing in mean annual summer temperature) on the South Island of New Zealand. We investigated whether she...
متن کاملSmall-Scale Intraspecific Life History Variation in Herbivorous Spider Mites (Tetranychus pacificus) Is Associated with Host Plant Cultivar
Life history variation is a general feature of arthropod systems, but is rarely included in models of field or laboratory data. Most studies assume that local processes occur identically across individuals, ignoring any genetic or phenotypic variation in life history traits. In this study, we tested whether field populations of Pacific spider mites (Tetranychus pacificus) on grapevines (Vitis v...
متن کاملHost life history responses to parasitism.
Parasites and their infections can adversely effect a host's growth, reproduction and survival. These effects are often not immediate, but increase with time since infection. A general prediction from evolutionary biology is that hosts suffering from this type of infection should preferentially allocate resources towards reproduction, even if this is at the expense of their growth and survival....
متن کاملParasitism shaping host life-history evolution: adaptive responses in a marine gastropod to infection by trematodes.
1. Variation in life-history strategies among conspecific populations indicates the action of local selective pressures; recently, parasitism has been suggested as one of these local forces. 2. Effects of trematode infections on reproductive effort, juvenile growth, size at maturity and susceptibility were investigated among different natural populations of the marine gastropod Zeacumantus subc...
